From virtual one-time cards to Klarna Balance and debit-led payments
Klarna Card started as a way to take BNPL beyond integrated checkout. Before there was a physical card, Klarna used virtual one-time cards to let customers generate a card number in the app, pay at almost any online merchant, and split the purchase afterward.
Klarna Card has evolved from a BNPL workaround into a broader everyday spending product. What started in 2018 with virtual one-time cards allowed users to split online purchases even at merchants that were not directly integrated with Klarna. By 2019, the Visa-powered physical card extended that flexibility into stores, helping Klarna bridge one of BNPL’s biggest gaps: offline payments.
The next phase moved the card beyond payments into post-purchase decisioning. Between 2021 and 2023, Klarna embedded Pay Later and financing options into card rails, allowing users to choose how to repay after the transaction rather than deciding upfront.
By 2024, Klarna shifted toward a debit-led model with Klarna Balance, letting users spend from stored funds, earn cashback, and switch between pay now and pay later. With more than 5 million active card customers across 16 countries and 15% of payment volume now card-based, the card has become a key part of Klarna’s move from checkout financing toward higher-frequency financial engagement.
